In the US, doctors don’t strictly require ApoE genetic testing before initiating therapy. However, many specialists will do this testing because it helps determine the risk of developing side effects called amyloid-related imaging abnormalities (ARIA), which include brain swelling and micro-bleeds. Carrying or more copies of the gene greatly increases the risk of these side effects, which can cause serious complications in rare cases.
