Not all cases of dementia can be prevented, but researchers estimate that a substantial proportion may be preventable or delayed by addressing modifiable risk factors throughout life. The 2024 Lancet Commission identified 14 potentially modifiable risk factors — including physical inactivity, high blood pressure, hearing loss, social isolation, diabetes and traumatic brain injury — and estimated that addressing them could prevent or delay about 45 percent of dementia cases.
